The institution

Ohio Dominican University (ODU) is a small, private university located in Columbus, the largest city and state capital of Ohio. At ODU you will have a very personalised education experience – class sizes are small (on average you will have 18 -20 students in a class) meaning that you can get the attention that you need from the university professors.

It was founded in 1911 by the Dominican Sisters of Peace. It proudly continues to embody a Catholic ethos but don’t worry if you are not a Roman Catholic – student of all religions are welcome here!

Majors

Despite its small size, Columbus offers 39 market-driven majors at Bachelor degree so you have plenty of choice. Popular fields of study include Business, Computer Science, Finance, Pre-Medical and Psychology but be sure to check the full list of available majors on the university website by clicking here.

For budding engineers, the university has partnered with the University of Dayton, Ohio to offer a streamlined 3+2 route to a Bachelor’s and Master’s in Bio, Chemical, Chemistry Materials, or Computer Science Engineering, saving you one year of time and money!

The institution is a great option for students who have already started university studies in their home country as they make the process of transferring credits as simple as possible. Rather than having to undergo a credential evaluation through an organization such as WES, the university will do an in-house evaluation that will quickly give you a good idea of the number of transferable credits you have.

This institution offers a much smaller range of Master’s programs but its MBA program is extremely affordable and offers 7 different concentrations according to your personal requirements – Healthcare Administration, Data Analytics, Finance, Risk Management, Accounting, Leadership and Sports Management.

Scholarships

Like many private universities in the USA, ODU’s tuition fees at bachelor degree level look high at first, but the university offers a range of generous scholarships and it is possible to combine several different awards to really minimise your expenses.

Merit scholarships of $13,000 – $15,000 per year are guaranteed to all students with a GPA of 2.5 or above and there are a number of smaller awards potentially available. Overall, the average award is $17,000 – $18,000 per year, making the University surprisingly affordable.

Graduate students are not able to benefit from any scholarships but, as you can see, their tuition fees are already highly competitive.

Location

ODU is located in the suburbs of Columbus, Ohio on a 75-acre campus. Columbus is a city of approximately 900,000 inhabitants, making it the 14th most populous city in the USA. And, as you may have guessed already, it is named after Christopher Columbus, the 15th century explorer who ‘discovered’ the continent.

Columbus is home to six Fortune 500 companies and 20 fortune 1000 companies, and ODU makes it a priority to create relationships with many of them. The University hosts one of the most popular college job fairs in the area each year and many of it’s students are able to gain real-world experience prior to graduation as well as to seek work opportunities through OPT after graduating

The city regularly ranks very highly for job opportunities for newly graduate students; recent accolades include #5 Best City for New Graduates (OnlineDegrees, com, 2018), Top 5 City to Start a Career (USA Today, 2017) and #1 City for Tech Workers (Smartassed.com, 2017).

If you’re a keen sports fan, you might decide to become a fan of Columbus Crew, the city’s Major League Soccer team, or Columbus Blue Jackets of the National Hockey League.
