The institution

Founded in 1932, Lewis University is a medium size private Catholic university, located in Romeoville, Illinois about 55 km from Chicago.

Lewis is ranked in the Top 20 Universities in the Midwest region of the USA by the US News & World Report. It is also rated as a Best in the Mid-West by Princeton Review.

Students at this institution will enjoy plenty of personal attention – class sizes are small with an average class size of just 17 students. Small classes give you much greater opportunities for discussion and debate with your fellow students and with the professor.

The institution has Roman Catholic roots, specifically Lasallian (from the De La Salle Brothers). While it is proud of these roots and continues to hold its ethos and traditions, today, it is very proud to welcome students of all faiths and cultures.

Majors

A wide range of fields are available at the undergraduate level with a strong focus on employability – Bachelor degrees such as Business Analytics, Cyber Security, Data Science, and Supply Chain Management offer skills that are highly sought after currently.

For those interested in employment in the aviation industry, Lewis is one of the top-rated aviation schools in the United States.  Students will find programs that cover the full range of job opportunities, including Aviation Administration, Aviation Maintenance Technology, Aerospace Technology, and Aviation Flight Technology (for those wishing to become commercial pilots).

In addition to having its own regional airport on campus, the Aviation Department has active partnerships at both Chicago Midway and Chicago O’Hare International Airports. With Chicago, home to the world’s second busiest airport (O’Hare) as well as United Airlines, being in close proximity, it is a great place to prepare for employment in the aviation sector.  The College of Aviation also has a Bachelor in Unmanned Aircraft Systems for those interested in helping to develop to the potential for commercial drones.

This school is a great option for students who have already started university studies in their home country as they make the process of transferring credits as simple as possible. Rather than having to undergo a credential evaluation through an organization such as WES, Lewis will do an in-house evaluation that will quickly give you a good idea of the number of transferable credits you have.

At the Master’s level, there is a Computer Science program with several ‘hot’ concentrations such as artificial intelligence, digital forensics, and software engineering, as well as in Cyber Security and Data Science. There are also Master’s programs in Aviation & Transportation and Nursing – core strengths of the institution.

Its MBA program is extremely affordable and offers 6 different concentrations according to your personal requirements – Accountancy, Finance, Healthcare Informatics, Human Resources, Marketing, and Operations Management. The College of Business also has Masters of Science programs in Business Analytics, Finance, and Project Management.

Scholarships

A lot of scholarship opportunities at undergraduate level exist for students with a strong academic background. Both Freshmen and Transfer applicants are automatically considered for scholarships worth up to $15,000 per year, based on their previous academic grades.

There are no scholarships offered at Master’s level as tuition fees are already extremely competitive. However, students may apply for a limited number of graduate assistantship positions during their first semester – these positions offer discounts on tuition and, in some cases, may also give the beneficiary the chance to earn a salary from the university.

Location

Romeoville is a small college town of approximately 40,000 inhabitants. It is located approximately 55km from Chicago, the third largest city in the USA with a population of nearly 10 million in the metropolitan area.

Famous for its architecture (especially its historic skyscrapers), museums, jazz and blues music scene and much much more, Chicago is a fun city in which to spend some of your free time. There is a limited commuter train service between Romeoville and Chicago but students wishing to visit Chicago at weekends are best advised to go by car or taxi.

The town of Romeoville is a safe and quiet – an ideal place to study.  Additionally, the town is in a great location.  Only 40 minutes to the international airport, 40 minutes to Chicago, and about 10 minutes from local restaurants, shopping, and grocery.

Traveling around the area is easy for students.  The school offers a free student shuttle bus, to local Romeoville shopping areas. The bus runs Thursday through Sunday.  Additionally, there is a city bus (for a small fee), with a route connecting students to other local suburbs. There are two nearby train options for traveling in and out of Chicago.  Yet most students rely on car share apps (such as Uber) to cheaply move around the area.

Campus Life

Despite its relatively small size, there is plenty of campus life. From theatres to sports facilities, the university offers plenty of outstanding facilities for students and the wider community.

The Recreation and Fitness Center has a fully equipped fitness center, indoor swimming pool, aerobics studio as well as basketball, badminton and volleyball courts. Students who like to participate in sports are invited to make the most of the university’s Intramural Sports Program, where there are competitions within the university in major team sports such as Football/Soccer, Basketball and Volleyball.

The sports teams, all known as The Flyers compete against other colleges at an NCAA Division 2 Level in those sports and many more, including Track & Field and Tennis. There are many former students who have gone on to become professional sportspeople – including Olympians and professional football players.

There are over one hundred student organizations that you can opt to join covering all areas of interest – sports, performing arts, different religions and inter-faith groups  and of course the Black Student Association. Students run the campus radio and television stations.

Housing

There are 12 different residence halls on campus, housing approximately 1200 students in total. Students living on campus have access to free WiFi internet, shared kitchen space for person cooking, cable television, access to washing machines and a Campus Shuttle to nearby shops at no additional cost. The residence halls for Freshmen students offer double occupancy rooms with communal bathrooms along the corridor. Each of the Freshmen Halls of Residence have a large communal lounge area with pool table, tennis table, TV and vending machines. Upperclassmen and graduate students have access to different halls of residence, offering a mix of single or double rooms. Most of these residence halls also offer communal bathrooms along the corridor, though there are three halls offering apartment-style configurations. Further information about the different on-campus residences available can be found here All students living on campus are required to purchase one of the three meal plans offered. Students living off-campus have the opportunity to purchase meal plans if desired or, if they prefer, they can buy meals individually at one of the five campus eateries. Further information about meal plans and the different restaurants on campus can be found here
