Fulton Montgomery Community College (FMCC)

The institution

Fulton-Montgomery Community College (FM) runs the first two years of a bachelor program before you transfer to a 4-year university to complete the remaining 2 years (2+2).

FM is part of the SUNY (State University of New York) system, a large public system of 64 campuses across the state of New York. As a result, FMCC offers guaranteed transfer to SUNY campuses, including nearby University of Albany, the nearby private institution Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, as well as a number of both public and private universities located in other states.

Over the years, international students have transferred from FM to many of the US’s (and indeed the world’s) leading universities, including Cornell, NYU, Stanford and UC Berkeley. For further information on why the community college pathway can be a great option, please click here.

Students aged 16+ and with a strong academic profile may also consider FM and its Early Special Admission Program program. Save time and money by taking classes that allow you to complete a U.S. High School diploma and, at the same time, earn you credits towards a bachelor degree!

FM is a popular choice for international students thanks to its affordability and fantastic transfer options into top 4-year universities in New York State and beyond. Typically there are 100 international students from around 30 different countries on campus at any one time so you are sure to make global connections during your studies!

It is a relatively small college of 2500 students located in a rural setting. So, it is an excellent option for serious students who wish to focus on getting the best possible grades to transfer to the third year of a bachelor degree at a top university. Small class sizes will also help students to get the personal attention that they need.

Majors

FM offers over 40 different majors so you have plenty of choice. Popular fields of study at FMCC include Business, Computer Science and Media Arts and its Associate Degree in Health Sciences is a popular pathway into a wide variety of health and medical-related majors. Scholarships

FM College offers perhaps the most attractive scholarship program of any Community College in the USA!

All international students who are admitted to FM Community College are guaranteed an annual scholarship of $5,000, which brings the estimated cost of a year’s expenses, including tuition, housing and food to $18,000 and making it one of the most competitively priced programs in the country.

Location

FMCC is located in the small city of Johnstown (population: 10,000) in the foothills of the beautiful Adirondack Mountains, located 70km from Albany and 300km from downtown New York City.

New York City of course needs no such introduction, but you may be surprised to learn that it is Albany, not New York City, that is the capital city of New York State. Albany is an attractive city of approximately 100, 000 inhabitants. Both Albany and NYC are accessible by train from the Amsterdam Amtrak station (located 15km from Johnstown).

Campus Life

There’s plenty to keep you entertained at FMCC when you have finished studying for the day. Sporty types can make use of the fitness center or perhaps try out for one of the Fulton Montgomery college’s sports teams.

There are also 30+ clubs at FMCC covering a wide range of interests including music, photography, language and even food (yes, food lovers should certainly join the Epicurean Food Club!). Students of the World Club fosters great opportunities for inter-cultural exchange and you may also wish to join the Black and Latino Student Association at Fulton Montgomery.

Student Housing

FM’s Raiders Hall residence is adjacent to the campus and offers suite-style accommodation with each self-contained apartment containing two double-occupancy rooms, living room and bathroom. High-speed internet is included and you will have access to laundry facilities on-site.

Student housing suites at FM include a full kitchen so students can save money preparing their own meals. College food service is also available for FMCC students who want to purchase prepared meals.

What comes next after completing your education at FMCC?

Most students come to FMCC as a first step towards gaining a Bachelor degree. You will therefore normally complete your Freshman and Sophomore years (Years 1 and 2 of the Bachelor), before transferring to a 4-year university for the Junior and Senior years (Years 3 and 4).

While you may be eager to transfer to a university as quickly as possible after completing your program at FMCC, did you know that you can be eligible for one year of OPT (Optional Practical Training) before going on to continue your studies at a university, if you prefer. OPT is an opportunity to work off-campus in an area related to your study for up to 12 months: you will gain valuable work experience and, at the same time, you will be paid! If you do opt for OPT after Fulton Montgomery, you are eligible for another year of OPT after completion of your bachelor’s degree.
